ABOUT
Girls Rock NC is an organization that provides music and arts programming for girls ages 7-17. Girls are too often marginalized in our creative community. As young women we begin to read about feminism, we listen to some progressive, challenging music and we finally start working towards an equal footing with our male peers. What if a thirteen-year-old girl had access to the eye-opening materials we found in our twenties? Girls Rock NC is here to give every girl we can reach that very access, and guide them towards an equal footing now. We accomplish this with programming that focuses on the “three Cs”, creativity, confidence and community. It’s not enough to hand a young girl an I-pod loaded with feminist music. She needs to know what to do with the messages she hears. How does she engage her community with her new ideas and sense of self worth? How does she gain the confidence to make her voice heard? We believe that loud, unapologetic music is a great place to begin.
